<image:title>Admission & Arrival - Getting to Byron Bay</image:title>
<image:caption>The Sanctuary Byron Bay is serviced by Ballina Byron Gateway Airport (BNK) located in Ballina just a short 20 minute drive from Byron Bay, and also Gold Coast Airport (OOL) located in Coolangatta, QLD which is an hours drive from Byron. Both Airports accommodate private jet and private air charter flight facilities as well as commercial carriers. Gold Coast International airport has a limited international service, so clients travelling from international destinations on commercial flights may also choose to fly into Brisbane Airport (BNE) which is a 2hr drive from Byron or Sydney International Airport and then connect on a domestic flight to Ballina or Gold Coast. You may make your own way from the airport to meet with us or if preferred, Sanctuary personnel will meet you in an unmarked vehicle upon your arrival and deliver you discretely to your private residence, already prepared for your admission. If you are well known or high profile, additional security measures can also be arranged to ensure a discreet arrival.</image:caption>

<image:title>Admission & Arrival - Arrival</image:title>
<image:caption>We appreciate that entering treatment can be harrowing and uncomfortable, particularly if you're feeling fragile, so we try to ensure you land softly. On your first day, we make sure you are safe, comfortable and have enough space and time to acclimatise to your new surroundings. Ideally you should plan to arrive at The Sanctuary late in the morning or during the early afternoon. This will allow ample time to complete admission procedures, any preliminary medical assessments, and for you to enjoy a massage and relax for the rest of the day. If you need help to arrange connecting flights and transfers so you arrive at the recommended time, we will be only too pleased to assist you. Generally your first day will unfold as follows: You will be greeted by our Client Services liaison, your on-duty Registered Nurse and your own personal chef; After completing some preliminary admission procedures, your nurse will conduct some basic observations: including blood pressure, temperature etc. Your nurse will stay with you for as long as necessary, but always at least for the next 12-24 hours to ensure you are well looked after during your first day; You will then be shown around your 'sanctuary' - your own private, discreet, comfortable home; We will help you unpack and settle in; Lunch will be prepared and served by your personal chef; Our doctor will arrive after lunch to conduct a more thorough medical assessment and to establish a clinical care plan for the following week. This is always under review alongside recommendations of other practitioners with your care plan responding to your changing needs. To help you relax, we usually schedule a massage or bodywork session in the afternoon. The rest of the day is at your leisure. Dinner is usually served in the early evening. If you are undergoing a detox, we ensure that we do our best to keep you calm, relaxed and pain-free. All withdrawal symptoms will be monitored and medication prescribed as required. After dinner, you can listen to some music, watch some television, read, go for a walk, or just do nothing. When you're ready to go to bed, we'll monitor your rest to make sure you're comfortable and safe throughout the night. You will never be alone during this crucial settling-in stage as your nurse or personal support staff will always be on hand. All personal staff are carefully chosen for their genuine warmth and for their skill and experience in providing comforting care.</image:caption>

<image:title>Seeking Treatment - Seeking Treatment</image:title>
<image:caption>Making the decision to seek treatment is brave, but can also be daunting. We completely understand that when you're struggling with any physical or mental health condition, the effort required to actually get into treatment can often seem overwhelming. You can contact us anytime at The Sanctuary Byron Bay by telephone or email, and your journey to recovery may begin. Please know that your privacy is of the utmost importance to us and confidentiality is a key component of our treatment approach. We will confidentially discuss and assess your presenting problem/s and determine what you hope to accomplish from treatment. You will be provided further details about the program including various options and program costs. If for some reason you decide The Sanctuary Byron Bay is not suitable, we will endeavour to refer you elsewhere. We always encourage people to seek treatment, whether with us or elsewhere, and we have no hesitation in acknowledging more suitable options where appropriate.</image:caption>

<image:title>Seeking Treatment - Assessing Your Treatment Needs</image:title>
<image:caption>Following your initial enquiry, a formal phone consultation may be scheduled with a senior clinician. During this consultation, a more detailed assessment of your situation will be undertaken, and you will be given more specific program details and options. You will also be informed as to what outcomes might be achieved in certain time frames. Any proposed program will be tailored to fit with your particular schedule and optimised to ensure your goals are achievable throughout your stay. Members of your family or any significant others can also be invited to participate in some aspects of your program, but only where necessary and only on your approval. We may also discuss and assess any need for aftercare following your return home. Following your assessment, you are welcome to take as much time as you need to consider and discuss your options with any of your current treating practitioners, your family, significant others and/or your friends. You are under no obligation to proceed but when and if you wish to, all you need to do is call, and all the necessary preparations for a smooth and stress-free arrival will be made. If you choose to proceed, and with your permission, we will also liaise with any of your current treating practitioners to better understand your treatment history and needs prior to your arrival.</image:caption>

<image:title>Treatment Conditions - Alcohol Addiction Treatment</image:title>
<image:caption>Alcoholism or alcohol addiction is a chronic condition requiring sustained intervention and treatment. Those who are dependent on alcohol experience a craving for alcohol, a loss of control over their drinking, withdrawal symptoms when not drinking, and an increased tolerance to alcohol so that they have to drink more to achieve the same effect. Alcohol dependence is considered a progressive condition characterised by a strong need to drink despite undeniable problems associated with continued use. Dependence on alcohol is a serious health issue which can lead to deteriorating functioning, problems relating to loved ones, and chronic health problems such as cirrhosis of the liver. Alcoholism can be physically damaging and can profoundly affect the way one views the world, and if left untreated, can ultimately lead to early mortality. If you are not sure if you have a problem with alcohol, you can try an online self-test using the AUDIT (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test) tool developed by the World Health Organisation (WHO) to determine if your alcohol consumption might be harming your health. Please be aware that early phases of detox and treatment must be medically supervised as abrupt withdrawal from drinking can be fatal. You may undergo your detox prior to your arrival at The Sanctuary. If deemed suitable we also offer a separate Detox Program with 24/7 medical supervision. A Holistic Approach To Addiction Treatment The Sanctuary’s approach is truly holistic, bringing together your mind, body and your deepest self into alignment and harmony, but importantly, at the right pace and with the most appropriate therapies at the right time. We remind you that early phases of detox and treatment must be medically supervised as abrupt withdrawal from drinking can be fatal. Once withdrawal is stabilised, personal training, body work and complementary therapies help to strengthen the body while intensive psychotherapy and other reflective therapies help to understand the underlying issues behind the urge to drink. In addition to treating the actual addiction, we will also work with you and teach you how to identify and deal with the issues beneath the surface. We endeavour to help you understand what is driving you to use alcohol, and will work with you to resolve these underlying issues. We will empower you with a sense that not only are your issues manageable but that alcohol is not a necessary or even helpful solution, and give you the tools to live a happy and fulfilling life without alcohol and its devastating effects.</image:caption>

<image:title>Treatment Conditions - Anxiety</image:title>
<image:caption>While anxiety is a normal and very human response to any situation provoking, fear, pain or stress; any anxiety that is persisting, overwhelming or out of proportion to a given situation may require professional support and treatment. If you're constantly worried, exhausted and feel completely overwhelmed by your troubles, we can help. Hopefully, we can initially ease some of your concerns over the phone and help steer you towards the right treatment. Types of Anxiety Disorders Generalised Anxiety Disorder – fears and worries seem irrational or unrelated to a given situation, yet symptoms including nausea, shortness of breath, trembling, muscle tension, irritability, headaches, sweating and fear, continue unabated. Panic Disorder - people react with sudden and unpredictable episodes of panic to otherwise unremarkable situations. Often those with panic disorder feel they are about to die or that something disastrous is about to occur. Phobias – people develop intense fears about particular objects or situations. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) – people experience intrusive and compelling thoughts which require containment by elaborate rituals such as hand washing, checking and rechecking or counting. These rituals usually interfere with normal life and can be debilitating at the extreme end of the experience. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) – exposure to a traumatic event or situation continues to haunt sufferers months or years after. People with PTSD can often have issues with substance abuse and depression as well and can suffer marked changes in personality. Different types of anxiety require varying treatment approaches. At the Sanctuary we can help you understand the specific nature of your anxiety and focus your treatment accordingly. Holistic Anxiety Treatment Treatments for anxiety disorders can include psychological and pharmacological interventions. At The Sanctuary, our multi-disciplinary treatment approaches include relaxation techniques, problem solving, graded exposure, cognitive behavioural therapy and empathic supportive psychotherapy in conjunction with medical assessment and a comprehensive range of complementary therapies to treat anxiety disorders. Our holistic approach also requires comprehensive attention to your environment and to increasing your capacity to self regulate. Importantly, our aim is to have you understand that while feelings of anxiety cannot be banished, your sense of control can be increased and that through exercising this control, windows of peace will emerge and take hold in you.</image:caption>

<image:title>Treatment Conditions - Cardiovascular Optimisation</image:title>
<image:caption>Our heart and blood vessels work hard for our entire life. The cardiovascular system provides oxygenated blood to all our organs and tissues, and it remove toxins and waste products. Cardiovascular disease is largely preventable, with modifiable risk factors (such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol) accounting for up to 90% of the risk of myocardial infarction (heart attack). We take a multidisciplinary clinical approach to formally evaluate a client’s cardiovascular disease risk levels, then provide them with the best evidence-based strategy and treatments for their individual needs. A client’s specific circumstances are always taken into consideration so that a realistic and sustainable process can be implemented and maintained for the long-term. Prevention is better than cure but wherever possible we will also aim to reverse existing problems.</image:caption>

<image:title>Treatment Conditions - Chronic Pain Management</image:title>
<image:caption>Chronic pain is pain which is experienced beyond short episodes and which persists for longer than expected when healing from normal injuries or illness. Chronic pain can result from injuries, illness or in reaction to environmental or emotional stressors. Diagnosis is often complicated by the subjective nature of the condition, and the role of the mind in maintaining the experience of pain. Chronic pain is usually experienced as more than just a physical symptom. Other consequences can include depression and anxiety, reduced concentration, and reduced functionality in work and social relations, all of which contribute towards a generally diminished quality of life. This is where a holistic treatment approach can help - as how you perceive and relate to pain is just as important as the experience of the pain itself. Holistic Chronic Pain Treatment At The Sanctuary, complementary therapies are skilfully integrated into the treatment plan to help ease suffering and to support clients to gain mastery over their habitual responses to chronic pain. Importantly psychotherapy remains a vital component of treatment, ensuring any cognitive distortions or anxiety and depression are appropriately addressed. One of the significant issues associated with chronic pain is inadvertent addictions to painkillers. Without proper management, sufferers of chronic pain end up relying more and more upon high doses of painkillers with diminishing relief, so not only do they end up suffering from pain but also from addiction to strong pharmaceutical drugs. This is usually the point at which more comprehensive and skilled management is required. At The Sanctuary we consider chronic pain from a biopsychosocial perspective – where in addition to medical assessment of any possible organic causes, multi-disciplinary pain management strategies are explored and an examination of the social factors associated with the condition.</image:caption>

<image:title>Treatment Conditions - Complex Medical Management</image:title>
<image:caption>Our Comprehensive Medical Management Programs are designed for those clients with complex medical conditions requiring reviews by experienced physicians and specialists, with nursing support. We are able to review conditions, disorders and syndromes affecting multiple organ systems (neurological, cardiac, pulmonary, genitourinary/renal, gastrointestinal and endocrine). This program is not suitable for those requiring actual hospitalisation or those in an acute phase of their condition. The aim of our comprehensive medical management program is to assess how the condition is currently managed, refine an approach to treatment and introduce less invasive complementary therapies where able. An integrated ongoing management strategy is established that is suited to the individual requirements of each client. During your program, in addition to allied health and complementary therapies, you will have regular contact with your treating doctors and 24 hour nursing care where required.</image:caption>

<image:title>Treatment Conditions - Depression</image:title>
<image:caption>Depression describes a range of conditions associated with overwhelming sadness, hopelessness, lethargy and increased risk of physical illnesses. More than just a low mood, depression can be debilitating and is surprisingly common. It has been estimated that at least one in five people will experience depression in their lifetime. If you suspect you are suffering from depression, we can help. Treatment is recommended if the depressive condition is severe, chronic, associated with self-harm, or has failed to respond to other/previous treatment/s. Depression can worsen if left untreated, and it is important for the condition to be properly assessed. Depression Treatment At The Sanctuary, we treat depression in an integrated, holistic manner involving input from doctors, psychiatrists, psychologists, allied and complementary health practitioners. Your treatment is customised to your specific needs, and we will work with any of your existing treating health professionals to ensure continuity of care. While medical supervision is undoubtedly required, we also advocate the use of nutrition, exercise and healthy self-care. Regular exercise can be extremely beneficial, as can the use of complementary therapies. Some of the central pillars of our depression treatment plan include: A focus on meaning - we understand that depression is often a response to a lack of meaning or a lack of fulfilment; feeling that your life is just putting one foot in front of the other but not finding any joy, passion or spark. Through intensive psychotherapy and activity based therapies, we aim to bring back hope and a sense of joy to your life. A focus on diet & nutrition - to make uplifting neurotransmitters, an optimised diet is essential. We incorporate food that is delicious and high in brain-building elements to promote and support neurochemical balance and efficient, healthy brain function. A focus on exercise - getting your body moving can help you regain perspective. Exercise helps promote the production of 'feel-good' hormones and in combination with therapy, is considered to be one of the most effective ways to tackle depression.</image:caption>

<image:title>Treatment Conditions - Drug Addiction</image:title>
<image:caption>The key feature of addiction is the engagement in a particular behaviour which is compulsive and brings about a desired change in consciousness, yet proves problematic in the long term. Drugs can have powerful effects, bringing about obvious physical, physiological or psychological changes in the body. There are varying degrees of illicit drug use, and problems arise when the harms associated with use begin to outweigh the rewards. If regular drug use is likely to place you at odds with the law; or if continued use is beginning to affect your general health, moods, the quality of your work and your relationships with others, then your overall quality of life is at risk and professional treatment and support may be necessary. Drug abuse is prevalent and pervasive and cuts across economic lines, age, gender, social status and culture. Anyone can be affected by problematic use. Public perception of drug abuse is usually centred around illicit street drugs such as heroin and amphetamines, however the drug crisis currently faced by ordinary people often relates to the misuse of prescription drugs. Because prescription drugs are usually legally obtained, ongoing use may not have been appropriately questioned, and for those needing help, continued problematic use exacts a toll. Over many years at The Sanctuary we have noticed increasing prescription drug abuse amongst highly functioning people, unlikely to be identified as 'addicts', yet who qualify as having substance use disorders. Side effects sometimes cause more problems than the symptoms the drugs were initially deployed to treat. A Holistic Approach to Treating Drug Addiction The use of substances or drugs whether narcotics, stimulants, hypnotics or hallucinogenics, can be surprisingly complex. At The Sanctuary, we will help you understand what is driving you to misuse drugs, and work with you to resolve these underlying issues. We will help you understand the broader picture of addictive processes as they play out in your life, and give you the tools to live a happy and fulfilling life without needing drugs. Treating drug addiction holistically requires a sensitively staged approach. As abrupt withdrawals can be potentially fatal, medical supervision is required from the outset. Following the acute withdrawal stage, rejuvenating therapies, light body work and light personal training will help build strength and vigour. Meanwhile, intensive psychotherapy and other reflective therapies begin to illuminate the underlying deeper reasons behind habitual drug use. A renewed connection to life is bolstered through engagement in a range of interesting, fun and enjoyable activities. Our holistic approach will bring your mind, body and your deepest self into alignment and harmony. All of your program activities and therapies will be introduced at the right pace, at the right time, and in the right mix. Please be aware that early phases of detox and treatment must be medically supervised as abrupt withdrawal from drug use can be fatal. You may undergo your detox prior to your arrival at The Sanctuary. If deemed suitable we also offer a separate Detox Program with 24/7 medical supervision.</image:caption>

<image:title>Treatment Conditions - Drug & Alcohol Detox</image:title>
<image:caption>The Sanctuary provides a safe, medically supervised Detox Program with comprehensive medical support. Our Detox Program recognises the importance of comfort and constant support. During this program, experienced Doctors and nursing staff are available 24/7. Clients are given reassurance while learning how their bodies are reacting to the withdrawal of substances from their system. If you use alcohol or other drugs on a regular basis, some degree of tolerance will invariably develop over time. As your body adapts to substance use, more of the substance is needed to have the same effect. Importantly if you cease using alcohol or drugs, unpleasant withdrawal symptoms can occur as a detoxification process commences and your body readapts. Alcohol and drug (illicit and prescription) withdrawals are generally complex and unpredictable. The withdrawal experience without appropriate professional support can be difficult to manage, destabilising and potentially fatal. The prospect of having to go through an uncomfortable withdrawal is often the key reason for avoiding quitting drugs and alcohol use. Detox and withdrawal can feel simply awful. But you needn't worry. At The Sanctuary, your comfort is our main concern and we will cushion your detox experience with the most comprehensive detox management strategies available. At The Sanctuary Byron Bay, we are experienced in assessing complex substance abuse and we are able to devise the most effective and nurturing detox regime for a safe recovery. As our focus is multi-disciplinary, many of the symptoms of withdrawal can be mitigated by less invasive therapeutic modalities such as shiatsu and acupuncture. Nutrition and a healthy diet will help ease the physical suffering while practices such as yoga and meditation will help calm the mind. The withdrawal process is constantly monitored by registered nurses and specialist medical personnel in accordance with best practice clinical detox guidelines. During the Detox stage, we will: Help you understand the physical and mental discomforts you face Monitor your physical response and your emotional state Ease anxiety or any physical discomfort with the judicious use of appropriate medication Use the right combination of complementary therapies required to ease any side-effects of the withdrawal process Help you gain confidence to survive and prosper beyond this difficult period.</image:caption>

<image:title>Treatment Conditions - Executive Rehabilitation</image:title>
<image:caption>The Sanctuary specialises in treating corporate/executive clients requiring positive lifestyle changes with regards to substance abuse or management of executive burnout, stress, chronic pain or other mental health issues. Highly successful and motivated professionals and executives are not immune to developing dysfunctional patterns of behaviour to cope with the demands of their roles. They may resort to substance use or may suffer consequential harms such as chronic pain, depression, anxiety or inability to modulate moods. This can impair not only professional capacities, but also relationships with colleagues and family members. When the stress of professional life begins to flow on to the private and personal realms, sensitive and effective intervention is required. At The Sanctuary, we specialise in providing tailored assistance to corporate clients to help them regain balance and equilibrium. Even though intensive treatment must be undertaken away from the usual workplace, we do understand that realistically, some business demands simply cannot be put on hold. With a focus on work/life harmony, we enable executive clients to incorporate regular work commitments and responsibilities into their treatment program. The Sanctuary has successfully assisted many corporate clients to develop healthier habits, to deal with their issues, and to learn how to lead a more balanced life, while maintaining connection to their responsibilities at work.</image:caption>

<image:title>Treatment Conditions - Family & Couples Support</image:title>
<image:caption>Even though an individual’s treatment is important, it is equally important to work positively with and support the family system and relationship milieu. Please note our understanding of what constitutes a family and a partner is intentionally broad and inclusive. We value and respect the experience and views of family members and significant others. Where therapeutically relevant and with the client’s permission, we are able to invite family members or significant others into treatment. Our Family and Couples Programs provides family members and partners with: a forum to learn positive communication skills and address chronic issues and concerns with the guidance of a professional mediator; a chance to enhance mutual understanding of each others’ needs; a chance to reignite passion, respect and regard for each other; an understanding of the psychological, medical, and spiritual aspects of the recovery process; meaningful ways of supporting loved ones through difficult times; and referral to resources available in their community; On completion of our Family or Couples programs, clients, their partners and individual family members have the foundation to rebuild their relationships with each other, heal past wounds and create a new beginning for love and intimacy.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Individuals undergoing surgery may find it a traumatic process and the period afterwards can often be very challenging and disempowering. A strategic approach to recovery after surgery can ensure the best outcomes. Our expert multidisciplinary team will develop a post-operative rehabilitation treatment plan that is individually tailored to the client’s need and enables them to undertake a safe, efficient and sustainable path to recovery. Our approach to rehabilitation can also be applied to other traumatic events such as sporting injuries, recovery from a motor vehicle accident, a stroke, or heart-attack. Post-operative rehabilitation encourages a return to independence. A focus on practical abilities and quality of life is pursued while mental and physical strength is regained. We provide a rejuvenating environment and incorporate physical, psychological and creative therapies in beautiful natural surrounds. Our aim is to heal the whole being.</image:caption>

<image:title>Treatment Conditions - Weight Management treatment</image:title>
<image:caption>The Sanctuary can provide specialised multi-disciplinary weight management programs for those who are unable to maintain a disciplined program on their own, or for those who for medical reasons, require supervision and careful monitoring. Our aims are not only to ensure that a realistic weight management program can be developed but that it can be also maintained with a careful balance of lifestyle improvements, healthier food and adequate exercise. Education and active participation are also key goals of our weight management programs where intensive psychotherapy and coaching helps to examine the unexamined reasons behind living a sedentary lifestyle or eating unhealthily. Our weight management programs involve comprehensive medical assessments, 24 hour supervision, and assessments by dieticians, fitness professionals, physiotherapists, body workers and other complementary therapists. Importantly, each weight management program is uniquely customised to each person’s specific needs. You will also enjoy the services of a personal chef who will liaise with other practitioners to ensure that your food is prepared according to the recommendations of your treating team. Your chef will also educate you about your specific dietary needs and cooking lessons are available to ensure you leave with developed skills to maintain a healthy diet. You will be introduced to a range of healthy physical activities that you can choose to incorporate into a regular routine. All exercise will be monitored by professionals and your limits carefully respected so that we can slowly increase your capacity to engage in physical activity without inviting injury. At The Sanctuary, we promote a steady, sustained and most importantly safe approach to weight management, helping you to establish a program you can continue well into your future.</image:caption>

<image:title>Treatment Conditions - Wellbeing & Health Rejuvenation</image:title>
<image:caption>Good health is not merely the absence of disease or infirmity but is defined by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as "a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being". Good health is often compromised by emotional and physical stress, lack of fitness, poor nutrition and inappropriate body weight - whether underweight or overweight. From a holistic perspective, physical health is also linked to emotional and mental health. Diets for example are seldom effective without the necessary understanding of the psychological factors behind inactivity or unhealthy eating patterns. Change must occur both in behaviour and in attitude. At The Sanctuary, we provide specialised programs for clients wanting to create positive changes in their lives. If you feel that you are not quite as healthy as you can be; that you need support and inspiration to make lasting changes to your life; or if wish to maximise your sense of well-being - we can help you build a stable foundation for positive change. You may be carrying more weight than is healthy for your body. You may feel low in energy. You may not eat properly. You may work too hard and not know how to unwind. Many lifestyle factors contribute to feeling less than healthy. At The Sanctuary, we can help you examine all the factors in your life requiring change. We will gently guide you to adopt better lifestyle choices and help you continually develop and reinforce the new habits required to replace old ones that no longer serve you well. Our multi-disciplinary team will help you understand yourself better from a holistic perspective - a more comprehensive view of oneself that includes not only better understanding of thoughts and emotions, but importantly, a sense of improved physicality and a sense that you are in charge and in control. We will help you improve your diet and assess your level of fitness which we aim to improve during your program. We will help you identify emotional and cognitive 'triggers' and patterns hindering your growth and through a combination of targeted therapies, help you to increase your vitality and health. Our Well-Being and Healthy Living Programs are especially suitable for those clients not needing intensive medical care, yet needing sustained and positive changes in lifestyle. We can help to initiate and maintain lasting changes so you can live your life to its full potential.</image:caption>

<image:title>Treatment Therapies - Conventional Medical Assessment & Treatment</image:title>
<image:caption>Most Sanctuary programs will include a full medical assessment upon arrival, especially if you are seeking treatment for any condition requiring medical supervision. You will have your own personal doctor and registered nursing staff as required. From here further assessments and consultations with a range of medical specialists and allied health practitioners can be arranged. These might include (but are not limited to) psychiatrists, gastroenterologists, physiotherapists, dieticians etc. Our doctors and nurses are highly experienced and work in a team alongside other allied health and complementary health practitioners. This means we are able to critically review the use of prescription medication and pharmacotherapies, balancing their use with alternative treatments. Where possible, we will always promote treatments which are non-invasive, and with fewer side-effects. Where pharmacotherapies are recommended, we will always seek to minimise any side effects with the use of complementary therapies. Our aim is to help you harness your own capacity to heal. While we firmly believe in appropriate medical intervention, we believe that the best results are achieved with an integration of medical and complementary care.</image:caption>

<image:title>Treatment Therapies - Exercise Physiology</image:title>
<image:caption>Exercise Physiology is a specialist field in which physical exercise interventions are used to treat clients with a broad range of health issues. This could be for existing conditions or injuries, or those at risk of developing medical problems. Our exercise physiologists commence a treatment plan with an assessment of functional capacity to ensure their prescriptions and advice are safe and effective. The interventions are based around sustainable support and lifestyle modification, focussed on achieving behavioural change.</image:caption>

<image:title>Treatment Therapies - Psychotherapy</image:title>
<image:caption>Psychotherapy includes a wide range of treatment techniques to treat psychological problems and some psychiatric disorders. Psychotherapy remains one of the most effective treatments for addictions, depression and anxiety. While there are many types of psychotherapy practiced, all psychotherapists utilise the relationship between client and therapist as the vehicle for transformation. A therapeutically beneficial interaction is one where mutual trust exists and where the goal of treatment is to ultimately help a client change destructive or unhealthy behaviours, thoughts and emotions so that their quality of life is improved. Psychotherapy plays an important role in the healing process at The Sanctuary. For this reason, we only employ highly experienced, mature, and fully qualified therapists. Not only are our therapists innovative, creative and dynamic, they are also committed to working from a supportive, compassionate and respectful stance, where each client is encouraged to change and grow in his or her own unique way. If your life has become unmanageable and unhappy, psychotherapy can help to shine a light on the parts of yourself that you habitually avoid or from which you are dissociated – including your strengths. At the Sanctuary we try to help you understand the underlying issues associated with your presenting condition/s through psychotherapy. We aim to educate and inform, so that you may learn to understand yourself more deeply, and conduct yourself better as a result. We will help you understand and develop skills in formulating safe boundaries. We will help you clarify and gain awareness around your relationships, how you relate to the world and how you behave. Most importantly, we will help you find hope for a more fulfilling future.</image:caption>

<image:title>Treatment Therapies - Physiotherapy</image:title>
<image:caption>Physiotherapy is a clinical evidence-based therapy concerned with gaining maximum mobility and quality of life through the maintenance of a healthy and fit body. Physiotherapists will assess any pain in the body or physical restrictions and prescribe personalised exercise programs to manage any physical conditions and to further prevent pain and injury. Physiotherapy can include: joint mobilisation and manipulation; therapeutic exercise and stretches electrophysical agents (such as hot packs, ice and ultrasound); soft tissue massage including gentle manipulation of fascia and viscera; and breathing exercises and techniques. At The Sanctuary Byron Bay, physiotherapy plays an important role in ensuring that physical exercise is undertaken with care and that any pre-existing injuries are protected and rehabilitated.</image:caption>

<image:title>Treatment Therapies - Complementary Therapies</image:title>
<image:caption>A broad range of complementary therapies are available at The Sanctuary Byron Bay as required and on request. Acupuncture Acupuncture is a technique whereupon filiform needles are inserted into specific points on the body to promote healing and relieve symptoms of ill health. Acupuncture is based upon empirical observation and accepted by evidence-based medicine as a safe and useful treatment for a range of conditions. At The Sanctuary, acupuncture treatment is provided as a core therapy and has been successful in treating withdrawal symptoms such as nausea and headaches as well as a host of other conditions. Many clients report increased vitality as well as deep relaxation after treatment, and those clients who are with us to address drug and alcohol use additionally report reduced cravings for substances.</image:caption>

<image:title>Treatment Therapies - Diet & Nutrition</image:title>
<image:caption>Diet and nutrition are important healing aspects of your treatment here at The Sanctuary Byron Bay. During your stay with us, you will enjoy the attentive services of your own personal chef. Your personal chef will shop daily for fresh ingredients, and will prepare delicious fresh, light, unprocessed meals for you, using organic and in-season produce and ingredients. Menus will be prepared according to the recommendations of our practitioners in order to address deficiencies in your diet, and to nourish and strengthen your body. Your personal chef will take into account your own personal dietary preferences as well as recommendations from the treating team. Your chef may also take the time to provide you with information on nutrition and if you are interested in cooking, will teach you how to prepare recommended meals. Natural supplements including vitamins and minerals may also be integrated into your treatment plan where required. You may also consult with a dietician as part of your treatment if required or upon request.</image:caption>

<image:title>Treatment Therapies - Massage</image:title>
<image:caption>Sanctuary masseurs are highly experienced and very careful about the therapeutic focus of their work. Deep tissue massage is only conducted if appropriate and will always begin in a gentle fashion until you are able to withstand greater intensity. The aim of deep tissue massage is not merely relaxation, although that is often a pleasant outcome. Deep tissue massage addresses muscle pain, tension, tendon or muscle injury and is useful for increasing blood flow and oxygen flow around your body. Deep tissue massage is a therapeutically focused massage working on the deeper layers of muscle tissues in the body. Deep tissue massage is a feature of many styles of massage and is usually characterised by slower, deeper strokes undertaken with firmer pressure, sometimes localised on particular areas which are sore or stiff.</image:caption>

<image:title>Treatment Therapies - Shiatsu</image:title>
<image:caption>Shiatsu means 'finger pressure' and is a Japanese healing method with roots in Traditional Chinese Medicine. A Shiatsu therapist utilises finger pressure along the classical meridians (energy lines) of the body in order to assess bodily energy flows, remove blockages and restore balance. Based on an initial diagnosis, each treatment is different and caters to the individual needs of the patient. Shiatsu combines acupressure, massage and gentle stretching and can be both relaxing and stimulating as a treatment experience.</image:caption>

<image:title>Treatment Therapies - Personal Training</image:title>
<image:caption>Physical training is an important component of our therapeutic programs at The Sanctuary Byron Bay, as many interrelationships exist between bodily systems and mental and emotional states. We provide one-on-one personal training with fully qualified personal trainers, all with many years of experience. Our personal trainers are not ‘bootcamp’ instructors who will push you beyond your limitations. Personal training at The Sanctuary is always undertaken with caution and only after a detailed assessment of your physical abilities. We strive to avoid injury and we will always seek to increase your fitness levels slowly and with care. Personal training at The Sanctuary will include a combination of both cardio-vascular exercise as well as resistance training with weights. We will always ensure that any existing injuries are noted and not further aggravated and we will include a variety of exercises especially tailored to your level of fitness which we will seek to gradually and persistently improve.</image:caption>

<image:title>Treatment Therapies - Yoga & Meditation</image:title>
<image:caption>Yoga is a broad group of ancient practices originating in India which aims to integrate and unite the body, mind and spirit. Though yoga includes both meditative practices and asanas (physical postures), it is often the latter which is commonly described as ‘yoga’ in the West. At The Sanctuary, both aspects of yoga are taught, that is, postural practices and meditation. Both are especially beneficial in addressing the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of healing. Our yoga practitioners are highly qualified and experienced with many years of teaching experience. Yoga sequences are created individually for each client as each constitution requires a different program. Our one-on-one teaching ensures that the practices are attuned to your own specific strengths and limitations. Over the course of your program, we will help you establish and develop a personal daily practice for the future. The postures and breathing techniques we teach you will help to improve digestion, circulation and respiration, resulting in better awareness of your body and a sense of calm within.</image:caption>

<image:title>Treatment Therapies - Qigong</image:title>
<image:caption>Qigong (pronounced chi-kung) is an aspect of Traditional Chinese Medicine involving set patterns of bodily movement and postures coordinated with specific breathing techniques. Qigong is usually practiced to increase bodily self-awareness and to harness the body’s innate abilities to heal. Qigong is a calming and restorative practice and can be described as ‘meditation in motion’. Regular practice of Qigong can be beneficial in the management of stress, anxiety or depression. At The Sanctuary Byron Bay, our Qigong teachers will introduce you to personalised Qigong routines which may help you gain awareness of your body and breath and promote relaxation.</image:caption>

<image:caption>An important feature of The Sanctuary model is our focus on helping you reconnect to your creativity and passions. In addition to our clinical program, we encourage you to engage in your surroundings and to discover greater meaning in your life. We encourage your participation in activities that promote creativity and focus, for example dance, art, martial arts and music. We employ highly experienced and talented music and art therapists as well as musical instrument teachers, creative writing instructors, photography teachers, dance teachers of various styles and martial arts experts who are available to you as required. Our aim is to help you recognise your own undiscovered capacities to harness your inner strengths and passions, shifting your reliance away from maladaptive behaviours and negative cognitive patterns.</image:caption>

<image:title>Treatment Therapies - Personal Care</image:title>
<image:caption>Personal care is an essential component of all Sanctuary programs. Along with the therapeutic modalities working together to improve your health, personal carers are a key part of your treatment team, ensuring you are accompanied at all times during the intensive stages of your treatment. Carers usually stay overnight, attending to your well-being and domestic needs. In addition to helping serve meals, monitoring your medication and attending to your laundry, they will also accompany you to external appointments or outings. Carers are chosen for their experience, compassion and interpersonal skills. They provide companionship, sympathetic care and a friendly presence to ensure your home environment is comfortable and welcoming.</image:caption>

<image:title>Referrals & Interventions - Interventions</image:title>
<image:caption>Do you need help for a loved one? Are health issues getting out of control? When someone you know and love is going through a difficult time, it may not be easy for them to reach out for help. Prompt diagnosis and early intervention in the initial stages of an illness can have significant and life-changing consequences. Early intervention is the process of providing specialist input and support to a person who is experiencing or demonstrating any early signs or symptoms. Obtaining consent with a client to confidentially discuss their personal needs is an effective and respectful means of facilitating the beginning of the healing process. Once the door to change has opened, positive action can swiftly flow.</image:caption>

<image:title>Your Program - Your Unique Integrated Holistic Treatment Program</image:title>
<image:caption>To be truly healthy is to have every part of you aligned in harmony. Achieving optimal health is therefore a holistic endeavour. Too often, the experience of healthcare is fragmented, uncoordinated and even contradictory. Even if you stumble upon therapies that help, true integration and coordination of treatment can remain elusive. The Sanctuary was created to explore and demonstrate how a truly holistic approach to healthcare can be accomplished. We bring you back to health and wellbeing using a range of treatments and therapies with a team of exceptional practitioners and consultants who all work together with you one-to-one in the most integrated and effective manner possible.</image:caption>

<image:title>Your Program - Key features of your program</image:title>
<image:caption>All elements of your program are conducted on a one-to-one basis. Just you and your therapists. No groups. This is proven to be the most effective form of therapy, inducing deep and long lasting healing; We draw on a range of therapies and treatments from the best medical, allied and complementary health perspectives. These include general and specialist medicine, psychotherapy, physiotherapy, massage, acupuncture, fitness, nutrition and various other therapies as determined by the clinical team. Everything is integrated to ensure the treatment approach is coordinated and unified. You are assigned your own team of therapists and personal support staff for your stay. Typically this team includes 12-15 therapists and personal staff including carers, doctors, nurses, psychotherapists, physiotherapists, massage therapists, yoga teachers, acupuncturists, and any other therapies deemed necessary for inclusion in your unique program. Your program at The Sanctuary is finalised only after practitioners have spent time with you. Your treatment plan is only made once the therapeutic team has thoroughly assessed your needs and determined what will work best for you in the given time frame. Your program is dynamic and flexible. Ancillary and support staff liaise daily with each other and the therapeutic team to share their observations and experiences and to provide feedback to practitioners. This enables the program to respond daily to your shifting needs, allowing the flexibility necessary to promote maximum growth and recovery. Nutrition and a healthy diet is a focus of your program as we believe this to be crucial for increased wellbeing. You will have your own personal chef who will ensure all cuisine prepared is specifically created for your dietary requirements and recovery needs without compromising on flavour, quality or presentation. Natural supplements, including vitamins and minerals, are also offered where required. Daily therapies are offered with a range of fully qualified, experienced and registered practitioners. Daily therapies are most conducive to the development of deeper therapeutic relationships, whereby practitioners are more able to develop a comprehensive assessment of your needs, in the least time and with greater depth. Daily Exercise & Physical Fitness. Your emotional and physical wellbeing are connected, and we aim to improve your physical fitness through sustained exercise, body work and physical movement. We provide a wide range of physical training options including resistance and cardiovascular training, martial arts, controlled stretching and a range of sporting activities to suit your interests. Reconnecting and developing your Creativity & Passion. In addition to our clinical program, we encourage you to engage in your surroundings and discover greater meaning in your life. We encourage outdoor excursions and activities to rekindle your appreciation of being part of a living, sustaining environment, and we support your participation in activities that promote creativity and focus, such as dance, art, martial arts and music. You will never be lonely or isolated while in program. Your therapy is delivered one-to-one, however you still enjoy the support, mentorship and company of a carefully selected 24 hour support team including practitioners, carers and chefs. Privacy, comfort and luxury - your sanctuary. For the duration of your program you will enjoy your own private and luxurious residence appropriately styled to your specifications, with all that is required for a comfortable and healing stay. We want you to feel nurtured and supported in every possible way. Family Participation. We recognise the important role family members and significant others can play in helping you maintain a healthy lifestyle. For that reason, family or significant others are invited to participate in some aspects of your program where therapeutically beneficial and if/when requested by you.</image:caption>

<image:title>Aftercare - Aftercare</image:title>
<image:caption>Importance of Aftercare Our commitment to our clients extends beyond their stay at The Sanctuary Byron Bay. Our personalised Aftercare Programs address the many complex factors involved when a client returns home after completing an Intensive Program. We recognise this transitional period as one of the most crucial points in a person’s recovery and our Aftercare Programs are tailored to enhance sustainable health outcomes. You can choose to complete your Aftercare Programs in your home area or in a supported environment in Byron Bay. In all cases, Aftercare Programs are specifically designed to instil in you the skills and confidence you need to continue advancing in your recovery. We can also connect you to support in your country/state of origin. This not only helps to maintain a positive lifestyle, but also ensures the ongoing process of reorientation towards healthy living and fulfilling relationships.</image:caption>

<image:title>Aftercare - Recovery Coach</image:title>
<image:caption>While a therapeutic retreat like The Sanctuary Byron Bay provides you with better understanding and practical ways to improve your life, recovery often continues when you return home. Structured support is highly recommended during this period, in order to keep you ‘on-track’. Upon returning home, one of our aftercare options is to link you in with Recovery Coaches who can help you to focus on what is important during this recovery phase; prioritise your recovery goals; provide practical reassurance and support to continue on the path of recovery; identify and overcome any potential ‘triggers’ that may compromise your recovery goals. Specialist recovery coaches are practical and solution-focused and work best when in regular contact with you over a specified period; to review your progress, discuss any problems you may be facing and to help inspire and motivate you to maintain and improve upon any gains you have made. Importantly, sessions with your consultant are usually conducted on the telephone, allowing greater flexibility and efficiency. You can choose to utilise our recovery coaches for as long or as short a time as you require. Some clients choose to engage recovery coaches over longer periods to assist them with longer-term goals.</image:caption>

<image:title>Aftercare - Continued Support</image:title>
<image:caption>Upon completion of your program, we can provide you with continued support by: providing you with referrals to practitioners in your local area; organising regular conference calls with our therapists to monitor your recovery, to share insights and to celebrate your accomplishments; and linking you to recovery coaches who will provide ongoing support and assistance in clarifying and achieving your goals. We value ongoing contact with our clients as an integral part of the healing process and to honour the therapeutic connections developed during your stay with us. Aftercare Home Support The Sanctuary Byron Bay can provide aftercare assistance at home by arranging for an aftercare support person to accompany you home upon the completion of your formal program. We usually ensure that the support person will be a carer with whom you have a trusting and warm relationship. The role of the aftercare support person is a formal one and the following considerations are subject to negotiation at the outset so that both you and the support person are clear about what to expect.</image:caption>
